Rest in peace

Michail Sergejewitsch Gorbatschow – Generalsekretär des Zentralkomitees der Kommunistischen Partei der Sowjetunion von März 1985 bis August 1991 und Staatspräsident der Sowjetunion von März 1990 bis Dezember 1991 – ist am Dienstag, 30. August 2022, nach schwerer und langer Krankheit im Alter von 91 Jahren gestorben. Er reformierte die sowjetische Politik mit «Glasnost» («Offenheit») und «Perestroika» («Umbau») und leitete mit Abrüstungsverhandlungen mit den USA das Ende des Kalten Krieges ein.

1990 wurde Gorbatschow mit dem Friedensnobelpreis ausgezeichnet. Mit einem Teil des Preisgeldes finanzierte er die ersten Computer der «Novaya Gazeta». 2006 erwarb er gemeinsam mit dem ehemaligen Dumaabgeordneten Alexander Lebedew 49 Prozent der Anteile an der Zeitung, um einen Ausbau zu ermöglichen. Zuletzt befanden sich 76 Prozent der Zeitung im Besitz der Redaktion selbst, während Lebedew 14 Prozent und Gorbatschow 10 Prozent hielten. Bis zu seinem Tod hatte Gorbatschow sich um seine eigene politische Stiftung in Moskau verdient gemacht. Die Organisation setzt sich für demokratische Werte und eine Annäherung Russlands an den Westen ein.

Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev - General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from March 1985 to August 1991 and President of the Soviet Union from March 1990 to December 1991 - died on Tuesday, 30 August 2022, at the age of 91 after a serious and long illness. He reformed Soviet politics with "glasnost" ("openness") and "perestroika" ("restructuring") and initiated the end of the Cold War with disarmament negotiations with the USA.

In 1990, Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. With part of the prize money he financed the first computers of "Novaya Gazeta". In 2006, together with former Duma deputy Alexander Lebedev, he acquired 49 per cent of the newspaper's shares to enable it to expand. Most recently, 76 per cent of the newspaper was owned by the editors themselves, while Lebedev held 14 per cent and Gorbachev 10 per cent. Until his death, Gorbachev had been active in his own political foundation in Moscow. The organisation advocates democratic values and Russia's rapprochement with the West.
